    About Me

    Healthy Watersheds Manager, Ausable Bayfield

Hi! my name is Mari Veliz. I am a Biologist and a Farmer.  I recently celebrated my 20th year at Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority as the Healthy Watersheds Manager.  Here, I work with producers, communities and agencies to better understand the field and watershed scale effects and financial costs and benefits of rural and agricultural best management practices.   At Ausable Bayfield, we have been educating people about watersheds, taking actions to protect soil, water and living things and monitoring to be sure that we are taking the right actions.  We build awareness around balancing our human economic needs with watershed boundaries.

I grew up in Stayner, Ontario.  With the rolling hills, bountiful agriculture and beautiful Georgian Bay on the front door, I have always been drawn to agriculture and the Great Lakes. I have a Co-op Environmental Studies degree from the University of Waterloo and a M.Sc. in Environmental Science and Ecology from the University of Alberta.

I am grateful to have raised two children on a farm in Oxford County.  My husband, two children, and I operate a 30-cow certified organic dairy farm on 150 acres.  The milking herd is rotationally grazed during the pasture season and housed on a composted bedding pack through the winter months.  Crop land is on a seven-to-ten year rotation, including one year of silage corn, two years of spring grains, three years of hay, followed by pasture.

You can find me marketing veal and beef and building community at the St. Marys Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from May to October.
