About Me

Rainelle Keeper

Rural Change Maker

My Name is Rainelle Keeper, I like to be called Rain. I am from Pikangikum First Nation and have lived here my whole life. Pikangikum First Nation is located on Pikangikum Lake, approximately 100 km (about 62.14 mi) northwest of Red Lake, Ontario. My job title is Community Liaison and I work with Opiikapawiin Services LP/Wataynikaneyap Power. I decided one day to try something so different, out of my box. I took a big risk by submitting my name to the Community Liaison position and it was the best decision I ever made. I have gained a lot of skills like communicating in various ways, technology knowledge, etc.

I am currently working on Prior Learning Assessment Recognition to get my OSSD in Eenchokay Birchstick School. Opiikapawiin Services LP encouraged me to apply for the Rural Change Makers Program and I was instantly interested in it because being a Community Liaison requires strong leadership. I am completely fascinated and passionate about the friendship that I share with my cats. My very first cat was male, and his name was Cass. I happen to have this idea of keeping the bloodline going. I took one of Cass's female kittens and I named her Sally. Since then, the tree has been growing which makes me so grateful and happy about it.

One of my goals is building a place like a pet store, vet, grooming, etc. It would be great to see one in a remote/isolated community. Gardening has been one of my goals as well. I feel like it would bring a lot of change in remote/isolated communities. What I would like to learn from RCM is how to manage a business and many more related to management.

Financial Literacy is a form of self care. Financial insecurities cause hardship and stress for people. Through financial literacy skills people are empowered to build their futures and generate stability for themselves, their families and community.
