About Me

Moriano Owen

Rural Change Maker

Boosho (hello),

My name is Moriano Owen (He/Him). I’m currently in my first year of college in Sault Ste Marie, ON with Sault College and studying General Arts & Science Program (1 year program).

I’m originally from Poplar Hill First Nation (Treaty No. 5) which is 120 km north of Red Lake, Ontario. My community is accessible only by air transportation or winter road during the winter months. I self-identify myself as an indigenous student as I’m very fluent in Ojibwe plus I was taught to speak my language by my parents throughout my childhood while living in an isolated First Nation community. Ojibwe is my first language. I’m a “Status Indian” under the Indian Act of Canada.

I feel Rural Change Makers (RCM) will allow me the opportunity to build on my leadership skills, creating new friendships and having new experiences. I’m looking forward to learning with others who are a part of this opportunity and getting something out of it in the end.

Elders Program

I plan to develop and elder program in my community to share the knowledge, skills, teachings, stories and language with youth in the community. I plan to work with local leaders, elders and the school in Poplar Hill to create a program where elders can visit children at the school once a month and create an elder education package for youth.
